My friends and I, who didn’t take extra academies, would head to Pikachu when the rest of our friends went for it. Sometimes, on days when we didn't want to go to after school classes, we'd go to Pikachu telling our teacher that we are going to a reading academy. For us, the comic book store was a haven from the world during our adolescence. The owner was always happy to see us, and in the summer he would give us ice cream from his small freezer. Sometimes he'd even let us sneak off to the adult section unnoticed. Our favorite comics at this comic book store was Shojo Mangas. We had never been in a relationship before, but we learned about friendship and love from Shojo Manga. \\n\\n중학생 때 살던 아파트 건너편에는 피카츄라는 만화책방이 있었다. 학원에 거의 다니지 않던 나와 친구들은 다른 친구들이 학원에 갈 시간에 피카츄로 향했다. 가끔 방과 후 교실에 가기 싫은 날에는 독서 학원에 간다고 하고 피카츄에 가기도 했다. 우리에게 만화책방은 사춘기 시절 세상으로부터의 안식처였다. 만화책방 주인 아저씨는 항상 우리를 반겨주셨고 여름에는 작은 냉장고 안에서 아이스크림을 나눠주셨다. 가끔은 몰래 성인 코너를 뒤적이던 우리를 모른 채 놔둬 주기도 했다. 이런 만화책방에서 우리가 가장 좋아하던 만화는 순정만화였다. 연애를 해본 적이 없던 우리는 순정만화로 우정을 배우고 사랑을 배웠다. \\n\\nWhen we think of Shojo Manga, we have a strong image of it as something that girls read lightly as children. In response, Jeon Hye-jin lamented that the word “Shojo” is used in a demeaning way, as if it were a feminine word, and that the broader and deeper worldview of Shojo Manga is ignored in favor of stories about a spirited girl romancing handsome men. However, the generation that grew up watching these comics has now grown up, and the works of the past are being re-evaluated. Looking back, I realize that Shojo Manga was not just a childish story of love between a man and a woman; it was a story of growing up, the pain of love, and female friendship. It was a story about various relationships between humans through the medium of love. She was one of the member of female manga artists group born around Showa 24 (1949). They have revolutionized the Shojo Manga scene in the 70s, called “Year 24 Group”. Riyoko Ikeda, who wrote “The Rose of Versailles”, was another key member of the group. They began a movement to combine manga with other genres such as science fiction, fantasy, and history. Prior to this, Shojo Manga had been created by male writers and male editors, creating the stereotypical Shojo Manga image we know today: big eyes and colorful flowery frames. However, they broke the stereotypes with delicate emotional expressions, unconventional storytelling, such as homosexuality, and complex compositions. These attempts enriched the narrative of Shojo Manga and allowed the protagonists to explore their own lives. As a result, the boundaries between girl's and boy's comics were blurred, and many artists who were influenced by these works were trained later. Whether it's Io from “Humanoid Io”, Mars from “Normal City”, or Amuro from “Petrol QT”, non-humans aren't depicted as a new species like in Star Wars, but rather as looking just like humans. Rather, they are often depicted as beautiful and handsome. They are also not portrayed as chimeric, like a combination of machines and humans. Robots and androids in Sci-fi Shojo Manga are not used as a way to express the instability of the human body and the strength of the machine. Through this method of expression, which has no physical difference from humans, it questions the acceptance of non-humans and humans. It does not reveal the existence of non-humans through physical differences, but rather talks about their existence by not revealing them. In order to talk about love and friendship between humans and non-humans, the relationship is formed through a sense of homogeneity, not a sense of difference. By eliminating differences, the object of love is not a man but an alien, a robot, or a cloned human.\\n\\n하지만 SF 순정만화 작가들은 서구 SF의 문법이나 남성 만화가들과는 다른 방식으로 이 장르를 활용했다. ‘휴먼노이드 이오’의 이오나 ‘노말시티’의 마르스 그리고 ‘페트롤 QT’의 아무로를 보면 비인간의 존재는 스타워즈에 나올 것과 같은 새로운 종의 모습이 아니라 인간과 다를 것 없어 보이는 모습이다. 오히려 아름다운 미남으로 묘사되는 경우가 많다. 또한, 기계와 인간의 결합과 같은 키메라적 모습으로 그리지 않는다. SF 순정만화 속 로봇과 안드로이드는 인간 신체의 불안정함과 기계의 강함을 위한 표현 방식으로 사용되지 않는다. 이렇게 인간과 신체적 차이가 없는 표현 방식을 통해 비인간과 인간의 받아들임에 대하여 물음을 던진다. 비인간의 존재를 신체적 차이로 드러내는 것이 아니라 오히려 드러내지 않음으로 존재를 이야기한다. 인간과 비인간의 사랑과 우정을 이야기하기 위해서는 이질감이 아니라 동질감을 통해 관계를 형성한다. 차이를 없애면서 사랑의 대상을 남성이 아닌 외계인, 로봇, 복제인간 등으로 선택했다.\\n\\nShojo manga is about the other. They build friendships and love with others who are different from us. As they go through various conflicts, learn and recognize their differences and become one. When this genre meets science fiction, the scope of others is broadened, and the scope of what we learn and understand is also broadened. Through tolerance and inclusion, we accept all living beings and move away from anthropocentric thinking. How can we learn to understand and love each other in a time when the concentration of hatred towards those who are different from us is so high? Of course, it's hard to embrace and love everyone.
